My favorite television show is One Tree Hill. I enjoy this
show because it’s entertaining, dramatic, and intertwines various situations I
find interesting. The show began as a high school drama series about two brothers
that shared the same father, the same passion for basketball, and an interest
in the same girls. The show is now in its ninth and final season. The plot has
changed since season one, but unfortunately, the show is still nothing more than
a fictional tale.
One of the things I find appealing about One Tree Hill is how
successful everyone becomes. All of the main characters are best friends and
become famous individuals despite various obstacles that stood in their way.
For example, Haley James Scott gets married in high school yet she continued to
become a professional singer. She then got pregnant yet still graduated college
and become a high school teacher while raising a child and maintaining a stable
marriage. Her husband, Nathan Scott, was paralyzed after a drunken bar fight,
but he worked hard and eventually made the way to his dreams as he was inducted
into the NBA.
I admire how Haley and Nathan fall in love and follow their
dreams; however, it is a bit unrealistic. It’s very rare that you’ll find a
couple who can maintain a marriage and have a baby at such a young age and then
proceed to become such famous, significant individuals. Even while Haley and
Nathan were still in high school, they were living together in their own apartment.
Haley was a waitress and Nathan barely worked, yet somehow the couple managed
to pay all of their bills and live on their own. Miracles happen, but very
little men are capable of playing professional basketball let alone after being
in a wheel chair.
Even though the show can be impractical at times, it still
grabs the attention of teenage girls, including myself. Everyone hopes for the happy
ending that all of the One Tree Hill cast members find despite the obstacles
they had to overcome. It’s important to follow your dreams, but it’s also
important to realize that your dreams may not come true as easy as they appear
to on television.
Shelby -- nice post, and well organized. Keep thinking about what we're learning in class about how and why shows are constructed the way they are. What else is un-real here? Does anyone ever have a bad hair day? Is anyone ever overweight? What impact do these more subtle messages have on teenagers over time?
ReplyDeleteoh, also, you mean very FEW men. No little men play basketball.
